LONGMONT/DENVER - Today, Governor Polis signed landmark legislation aimed at breaking down barriers to new housing, expanding transportation options for Coloradans across the state, and solidifying the state’s work to protect state lands and open space.
Governor Polis signed HB25-1273 - Residential Building Stair Modernization, sponsored by Representatives Boesenecker and Woodrow, and Senators Ball and Hinrichsen. This law allows for the construction of residential buildings to have a single central staircase throughout the building, allowing for the utilization of the extra space for additional units and homes. This means more units and lower costs for Coloradans.
“I am laser focused on breaking down barriers to housing and expanding housing options that Coloradans can afford. Smart-stair housing will help meet housing demands in our state. I am thankful to the sponsors for recognizing the need to create more housing now, and look forward to continuing to invest in innovative housing solutions here in Colorado,” said Governor Polis.
Governor Polis also signed legislation to help expand transportation options to save Coloradans time and money, improve air quality and promote new modes of transportation.
- SB25-161 - Transit Reform, sponsored by Senators Winter and Jodeh, and Representatives Lindstedt and Froelich. Read the Governor’s signing statement.
- SB25-030 - Increase Transportation Mode Choice Reduce Emissions, sponsored by Senators Winter and Hinrichsen, and Representatives Froelich and Lindstedt.
“Whether people drive, walk, bike, take the train or bus, Colordans deserve reliable, easy, safe, and quick transportation options. Expanding transportation options helps save people money, decreases traffic congestion, and improves our air quality. It is a win-win for Colordans and the environment, and I would like to thank the sponsors of both bills for meeting Colordans where they are and creating space to increase transportation choices in Colorado,” said Governor Polis.
Governor Polis also signed HB25-1332 - State Trust Lands Conservation & Recreation Work Group, sponsored by Representative Karen McCormick, and Senators Dylan Roberts and Katie Wallace, into law.
“Colorado is known for our spectacular public lands and outdoor recreation opportunities. Making sure that the next generation of Coloradans and visitors can experience all that Colorado's open spaces have to offer is critical to our state’s identity. This bill is about ensuring our state remains beautiful and accessible for generations to come. Thank you to the sponsors for working to create this legislation,” said Governor Polis.
Governor Polis also signed SB25-169 - Restaurant Meals Program, sponsored by Senators Jodeh and Pelton, and Representative Zokaie into law administratively.
In addition to signing this new law, the Polis administration today submitted a waiver to the U.S. Department of Agriculture to support access to healthier foods for Coloradans receiving SNAP benefits.
“We are one of the healthiest states in the nation, and these new SNAP criteria, if approved, will help bring healthier choices into food deserts and help Coloradans stay healthy while supporting Colorado farmers. Healthy foods save people money on health care, and increase energy, mental clarity, and reduce chronic health problems.SNAP provides critical help to Colorado families, and Congress should not cut the food assistance nor shift costs to the states,” said Governor Polis.
