The DMG has received $111,655 per year since 1996 from the gaming fund to safeguard hazardous mines the Central City/Black Hawk and the Cripple Creek area. The number of hazardous openings resulting from historical mining in these areas represents approximately 25 percent of the total number of hazardous openings throughout the State; the two gaming areas contain 6,100 openings. Since these funds were generated from gaming revenues in these areas the money is specifically earmarked for these areas. Approximated 325 openings have been safeguarded in these areas.
The program also continues to work with the Colorado Department of Health and Environment BLM. USFS, and the EPA in addressing other abandoned mine reclamation projects.
