2009 Hard Rock Reclamation Award Winners
Excellence
in Hardrock Mining Reclamation:
Outstanding Reclamation of the Bulldog Mine in Mineral County
Homestake Mining
Co. and the Emerald Mining & Leasing, LLC, were recognized for reclamation
efforts at
the Bulldog Mine silver mine in Mineral County. The mine was operated for several
years until depressed silver prices prompted Homestake Mining to commence final
reclamation. Located on patented and USFS-managed land, reclamation included
the safeguarding of underground portals and vent shafts. The waste dumps, tailings
ponds and mill building areas were reclaimed and the area carefully contoured
and revegetated to blend in with the surrounding topography. Wildlife habitat
has been enhanced, as elk and deer are regularly seen grazing in the reclaimed
area.
Excellence in Hard Rock Reclamation:
Innovative Water Treatment System at the Whirlwind Mine in Mesa County

The Whirlwind Mine is a uranium mine operation operated by Energy Fuels Resources Corporation near Gateway in Mesa County. The company was recognized for an innovative on-site mine water treatment system. The system treats mine water while minimizing costs and site impacts. Energy Fuels implemented an innovative modu-tank that employs portable systems that can be assembled and disassembled on site so that permanent features and reclamation are minimized. The system was reviewed under the stringent state environmental requirements. The system is wildlife friendly; elk fencing surrounds the treatment area to prevent large mammal entry, the steel wall configuration discourages small animal impacts and Energy Fuels has placed netting in the tank to protect bats from entering the tank. Reclamation will consist of ripping the footprint area, re-spreading topsoil and revegetation.
